Designing a Net Zero Energy Row House – Preservation Cafe

Apr 9, 2022

Designing a Net Zero Energy Row House: a Case Study, was presented by Will Teass of Teass\Warren Architects, Tuesday, April 19, 2022. The presentation was recorded.

Washington’s row houses not only form an integral part of DC’s housing stock, they define the character of our residential neighborhoods. Join us as we examine how to retrofit an existing row house to create a Net Zero housing solution for the 21st century.

Will Teass will explore both sides of the calculation to achieve a Net Zero project. On the plus side, solar production offers a first step on the path to reducing energy usage, but de-carbonization is also a key element. Reducing the building’s energy consumption for heating, cooling, hot water generation, and food preparation brings the equation into balance. Installing devices to measure energy consumption can help calibrate and understand usage so even further refinements can be made.

Teass has also explored ways to expand the original row house typology with practical solutions to accommodate the needs of a family. His project demonstrates the principles of “gentle density” with the addition of a second dwelling unit families can use to house multiple generations or use as an accessory dwelling unit.
