CHRS declines to support “carriage house” at 1001 South Carolina Avenue, SE, based on neighbors’ opposition and inadequate plans.

The Capitol Hill Restoration Society (CHRS) has reviewed this application, and offers the following comments.  As we suggested in our email comments on June 5, 2014, the applicant has specified a frame building, and the building’s dimensions and height.   The. However, important information is still missing, such as the materials for the roof, windows, steps, and door (door and entry is elaborate, and not appropriate for an accessory building) as well as the form and material of the corner boards.  The applicant should consider engaging an architect to help with the plans.

Multiple neighbors will be able to view the proposed building, and for this reason, the building must have a very finished look.  The views of neighbors are very important to CHRS.  For this reason, we suggested earlier that the applicant contact all nearby property owners and report on their responses.  Because it appears that many (perhaps all) neighbors oppose the project, and because important information is missing, CHRS cannot support the project at this time.
