THE 2015 CAPITOL HILL HOUSE AND GARDEN TOUR: May 9 & 10

This Mother’s Day, come explore New Northeast – a Neighborhood on the Move!
Saturday May 9 from four to seven p.m.
Sunday May 10 from twelve until five p.m.

This year the focus is on the near northeast Stanton Park neighborhood with homes close in to the Capitol, east to Lincoln Park. The Tour starts at the back side of the United States Supreme Court and runs east to Eighth Street and north to E Street. We have an outstanding collection of houses this year in a wide array of periods and styles, many with unusual details. There is a wood frame home from shortly after the Civil War, brick Dutch Tudors, Victorian bay fronts, and Federal styles.

The interiors offer striking differences as well. In some homes the very walls embody a sleek minimalist aesthetic while others are steeped in Victorian dark wall coverings. There are faux finishes that are outstanding and faux-grained doors that dare you to feel for the grain. There are, to be sure, wonderful old libraries. Some in traditional Chestnut cabinets, others housed in built-ins up to the ceilings, or up winding staircases to the converted attic getaway. Speaking of stairways, there are lots of them! Wide grand double-backs, narrow servants’ steps off the kitchen, rickety stairs down to unfinished cellars, and twisting steps awaiting the unwary. Even a hidden service stairway in the center of one old house.

Art flourishes on Capitol Hill where one resident collected untold numbers of south and central American folk art while others sport ancestral oil-on-canvas portraits of almost forgotten great-great granddads. Art and artifacts from across the globe contribute to the air of history and service that is Capitol Hill. World globes from the 1860s, African tribal masks, Afghanistan sleighs, and the very traditional crayon on ruled paper.

On Sunday, refreshments will be served in the tranquility of St. Monica and St. James Episcopal Church where the historic rectory is included in the tour. The gardens are a delight, serene and fragrant, a welcome break from the hustle of touring.
