Rediscover Eastern Market

Posted on April 22nd, 2019

A celebration will be held on June 7, 8 and 9 to mark the 10 year anniversary of the re-opening of Eastern Market following the 2007 fire. Docent led tours will be available June 9. Volunteers are being recruited to lead these tours. On April 30, 2007 Eastern Market suffered from a major early morning fire. Through the efforts of the City and the community, the Market survived and was restored and reopened two years later.  Many of us recall the re-opening celebration that included tours of the Market which were enthusiastically received by the public.

A celebration will be held on June 7, 8 and 9 to mark the 10 year anniversary of this happy occasion. The event will feature fresh food, music and special tours. On Sunday, June 9th, there will be guided tours of the Market that will include comprehensive information about the history, community significance, and architecture of the South Hall, North Hall/Center Hall, Farmers Line and the Pottery Studio/basement. Each tour will accommodate about 12 people and take about 45 minutes.

To lead those tours, docents are needed. Training sessions for docents will offered so they can lead the tours and provide interesting and insightful information about the Market. These will begin about two weeks before the Celebration. Specific dates will be set based on volunteer availability.

If you would be able to volunteer as a docent, please contact Barry Margeson, the Market Manager (barry.margeson@dc.gov) or Monte Edwards (monte.edwards@verizon.net). Not only will you provide a valuable contribution to the ‘Rediscover Eastern Market’ Celebration, you will also receive a new appreciation of the Market, its history and significance to the community.
