50 Years of Historic Preservation on Capitol Hill – Preservation Café

Posted on February 24th, 2025

The Capitol Hill Restoration Society (CHRS) presented a free, virtual Preservation Café titled “50 Years of Historic Preservation and Restoration on Capitol Hill,” on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. The café will featured architect Judith Capen, founder and principal, with husband Robert Weinstein, of the firm Architrave PC, one of the capital’s leading architectural firms.

Since 1976, Capen’s firm has specialized in historic preservation and sustainable design for many of the city’s postcard-worthy structures, including the Capitol itself, the House and Senate buildings, the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, and the Holocaust Museum.

Here on Capitol Hill she and the Architrave team have provided constant expertise for owners dealing with their vintage homes. Capen led the team that wrote the series of Capitol Hill Historic District Guidelines, which are in use across the city and the nation. Her firm won the 1998 Pro Bono Publico award from the Washington Architectural Foundation for these guidelines. The guidelines are available free on this website.

CHRS Preservation Cafés are free to both CHRS members and non-members. If you have a question about this topic, be sure to attend, as Capen will also answer attendees’ questions.
