The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is hosting a second public meeting to provide community members with an update on the design plans for the C Street NE rehabilitation project. At this meeting, DDOT will be asking for public feedback on a 100% design plan that was developed from community feedback. The plan focuses on streetscape elements like sidewalk improvements, traffic signal upgrades, better accessibility, and more.

Project Background

With reduced travel demand on C Street NE, this project reallocates street space to make it safer for people biking and walking, while still accommodating cars, trucks and other motorized vehicles. The project will focus on streetscape elements like sidewalk and crosswalk improvements, upgrades to streetlights and traffic signals, green infrastructure enhancements, changes to the public roadway to facilitate easier bus access, and better accessibility for residents with disabilities. It will include recommendations identified in the District’s moveDC Multimodal Long-Range Transportation Plan, which explores how transportation can make the District more livable and prosperous for everyone.

Another key element of the C Street NE redesign is an upgrade to the existing bicycle facilities, transforming the existing bicycle lanes into a separated cycle track going both east and west along the corridor.. These changes will facilitate better connections between neighborhoods and provide additional transportation options for residents.

On June 28, 2017, DDOT held the first public meeting for this project at Rosedale Community Center, showing the public 30% design and engineering. That input helped shape the 100% design plan, which DDOT will discuss at this upcoming meeting.

Study Area

The study area covers C Street NE between 14th Street NE and 22nd Street NE, and North Carolina Ave NE between 14th St NE and 16th St NE.
